As you will know if you have read through some of my recipes, I am trying to lose weight. To help myself along I went for a long (long) cycle ride today and I made an observation as I went.
I'm rather superstitious, particularly when it comes to magpies "One for sorrow, two for joy..." etc, etc.
If I see one magpie, I will salute it. This (in my mind) means that the sorrow which the single magpie portends will not find me. Honest.
I am almost a professional magpie spotter; I can recognise them in flight over the motorway (they have much longer tails than most birds) and I know where to look to try and find two together. I annoy my husband by randomly saluting birds at all times, in public and quite frankly making him look like he's walking with a mad lady.
On a bike, however, the saluting is not so easy. I'm still kinda new to bike riding (Ok, I did it a lot as a child, but children don't have fear in the same way as adults, do they?). As an adult, I'm wary of taking my hands off the handlebars, even to signal a turn. I worry I will fall off. So how can I salute a magpie?!
This happened this morning - a magpie alighted on the ground next to me as I was making a sharp turn and I could not salute it. "Oh no.. now the sorrow will find me" my little brain thought. I could have sped the sorrow up, of course, by saluting and falling off and thereby getting the whole ordeal over and done with.
Instead I had to do with a brief nod and a mental salute.
